The Holy Family Hospital is a maternity hospital owned and operated by the Order Of Malta. It is located in Bethlehem, in the West Bank between Jerusalem, to the north, and Hebron, to the South. (Located 500 yards from the birthplace of Jesus)
The French Daughters of Charity founded Holy Family Hospital in 1888 to minister to the sick and needy of Bethlehem. For nearly 100 years, the Daughters of Charity provided medical care under the most difficult conditions. In 1985 they were forced to close the Hospital due to insufficient funding.
In 1989 the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, in their tradition of devotion to both the sick and the poor, took over the operation and management of the Hospital. The Order was determined to provide medical services to women and infants who live in a region that has no health insurance or welfare system.
In 1990, the Order of Malta refurnished and renovated a portion of the old General Hospital and converted the facility into a modern, well-equipped maternity unit.
