Julia
Julia, from Bethlehem, is a 22-year-old Christian mother of two girls, Christina, 3, and Nour, 2. She was pregnant with a baby boy and needed to be delivered by caesarean section. Her joy at impending motherhood was marred by the fact that her husband, Issa, an electrician, had been unable to find work for three years because of the current political situation in the Holy Land. Julia and Issa could not afford the operation, and Julia would surely die in delivery. They decided to appeal to the Order of Malta’s Holy Family Hospital because, Julia explained, “it is a safe place to have a baby, and they help people like us with the expenses.” The hospital subsidizes all patients’ fees, but Julia asked the hospital’s social worker, Mary Mao, for even more help in covering the $265 cost of her caesarean section. Mrs. Mao found Julia’s family financial situation to be very urgent, and the hospital drew from its Poor Case Fund to cover the costs of Julia’s prenatal care and delivery.

Julia was seen regularly by Dr. Jadallah Naijar, an obstetrician/gynecologist. She was admitted to the hospital and delivered her 5 pound baby boy by caesarean section performed by Dr. Naijar. The next day, surrounded by Issa, Christina and Nour, Julia decided to name her new boy Nasri after his deceased paternal grandfather. Julia and Nasri left the hospital three days later. Both mother and child are doing well. This family, one of many who are helped daily by the Poor Case Fund, is very grateful to the Order of Malta’s Holy Family Hospital and to their generous benefactors.
