Leila
Leila, 28, and her husband, Salem, 40, are illiterate and unemployed residents of the Al Aroub refugee camp, located between Bethlehem and Hebron. They have five children. Leila, seven months pregnant, is separated from Salem and lives with her parents.
Holy Family Hospital assisted Leila with prenatal care, and in June she delivered a baby girl-sadly, with serious cardiac problems. Leila could not afford the expense of placing the baby in the neonatal intensive care, so the hospital had to absorb the costs. Despite the hospital’s heroic efforts, Leila’s little girl survived only thirteen days. The hospital provided psychological counseling for the distraught mother and her family.
